A family a raccoons residing under our household

Ever since I watched my mother rehabilitate & care for a disfigured baby raccoon when I was a small child, I have had a powerful fascination with those furry little creatures.

They’re so cute when they finally leave their nest with their mother for the first time.

They reach early adolescence & start growing good sized coats of attractively speckled & marbled hair. They follow behind their mother closely & watch with fascination as she digs for frogs & rodents. There are people who hate raccoons, however I honestly believe they’re adorable. I’m not bothered that a small family of raccoons is staying sizzling in our crawl space as our region sees record breaking lows this frosty season. They never get into our trash & it’s perfectly clear they’re under there attempting to survive in temperatures that are 20 below zero. Since I have radiant heated flooring in my home, they actually feel some of that heat resting below the household… Granted, most of the heat is rising from the floors & going in the opposite direction, however still creates a thermal bubble underneath that household that further insulates the building from the harsh cold season environment. Not to mention the lifesaving effect it is having on that family of raccoons as they actually brace themselves for the worst winter season we have ever had in this particular area. I sincerely hope whatever little bit of heat from our radiant heated floors reaches them as they rest below our household during the day & night. I wonder if other critters have chosen to crawl under our household in tandem with the raccoons. I don’t want an infestation of rodents by any means, however for now the raccoons aren’t actually harming anyone, let alone our household & us.
